The adult female common merganser is recognizable by her chestnut head which are clearly demarcated from her gray feathers on her chest.

Compared to the male of the species, the female tends to be somewhat smaller.  This size difference tends to be more subtle compared to other waterfowl, but out does contribute to overall physical distinction between the sexes.
