Hemaris Thysbe
I was relaxing and watching the hummingbirds and the bees extract nectar from the bee balm and butterfly bush plants on our deck. I was surprised when this unique newcomer showed up and began pollinating like the hummingbirds and the bees. At first I thought I was seeing a miniature hummingbird. Then I thought it was a rather large and plump bee. I was wrong again and soon found out this is a hummingbird moth, also known as a sphinx moth. These moths feed on flowers during the day and can hover just like hummingbirds, both species of which fan out their tails when doing so. The main difference between them is that these are insects not birds.
