Hallway to Nowhere
The colony was opened up by Emperor Napoleon III. Originally is was intended for political prisoners. At some point, it was extended to house murderers and the worst criminals in France. In a word, the prison was horrific in and by itself. It only could be reached by boat a distance of 8 miles from shore through rough seas and and hidden reefs making survival in the sea almost impossible. Only one prisoner ever managed to escape and survive - -" Papillon". Another nearby island , Ile Royale, housed this prisoners in solitary confinement for escape attempts. They were kept in darkness and in silence, some for up to 5 years..
