Swans going through the mating ritual is a pretty elaborate process and a long ritual primarily because the displays they make to each other are significant. They start out close to each other. When they are almost side-by-side, they begin to dip their heads below the water, pull them out and begin preening. After going through these movements several times, one pr both will stop and stretch its neck almost vertically. It is like a synchronized ballet.
