The Chase Is On
I have the good fortune to live on a small lake in Michigan, and have been able to watch a swan couple raise and protect their cygnets each spring. Nature always has a way of balancing things out, so not all of the cygnets survive each year. In fact, some years none survive even with the adults fiercely protecting them.
Swans are very protective of their nesting area and they consider their nesting area the entire lake. In this capture, the male swan is chasing a goose - - one of about 8 or 10 - that made the mistake of wandering into the swans' "turf" to feed on the vegetation.
The male swan can have a wingspread of up to 7 feet and weigh as much as 50 pounds. In comparison, a Canadian Goose typically weighs about 8 pounds and has a wingspread in the 4 - 5 foot range giving the swan a distinct size advantage.
I think it is more about instinct and attitude than size, as the adult swans will just as aggressively attack any person approaching the nesting area or the cygnets.
