The starkness of the cells, and the fact that prisoners always were chained, tells the story of how brutal life was in the Devil's Island Penal Colony.  Of roughly 80,000 prisoners housed here over the years only about 1/4 survived.

It was described as a "living death".

Muskrats are semi-aquatic mammals.  They look a lot like beavers  as they have furry bodies and partially webs hind feet. The biggest difference between the two is the tail.  The beaver has a wide flattened tail whereas the muskrat's tail is long and thin.   Muskrats are omnivores the help the waterfowl by creating channels in the underwater plants.  They also dine on shrimp, crayfish and other small creatures.

Here are a couple of facts I never knew.  The babies are called kits like the fox babies.  The adults are named just like deer.  The female is a doe and the male is a buck (without horns of course)!

This particular day on Lake Lochloosa was very calm with no breeze and very little movement on th water.  As a result the ospreys were staying close to their nest and very few adult eagles were out and about searching for food.  The white head and white tail feathers indicate that this eagle is at least 4 -5 years old, and therefore, an adult.

Most of the fishing was on the surface looking for scraps thrown in by fisherman that had floated out from the fish cleaning stations around the shoreline.

Barred owls can be primarily in the eastern US and southern part of Canada.  More recently they have expanded their territory to southwest Canada, Oregon, Washington state and northern california primarily because of changes to the landscape.

As you can see the barred owl has a large round head with a face that is grayish-brown.

These birds can be very aggressive if you intrude on their territory especially when they are breeding.

In our case, their was a breeding pair set back in their nesting area and when they flew out, they came directly at us in the boat at about 30mph.

Although they cannot kill humans (thankfully) when provoked they will attack. Given that their talons can due severe damage and lead to major cuts and bleeding it is best to use caution when you here them hooting loudly.

These barred owls are carnivores feeding on small mammals like, mice, squirrels, rabbits, frogs and snakes.  They also prey on crayfish, crabs and fish.  Either way they stash their prey in nests or in the branches of trees.

The average barred owl size is 16-25 inches with a wingspan of 3 - 4 feet.

They are territorial and can be aggressive toward intruders.  They will attack if they perceive a threat which we may have provoked by calling to them.

Alligators have a lot more teeth than us.  In fact, they have about 75 teeth.  Again, unlikes, when their teeth wear out or break off, they are replaced. (Sure would have saved me a lot of money over the years).

Over the course of their lifetime they may have as many as 3000 teeth.

Unlike a lot of other reptiles, they care for their young of about 2 years.  In contrast, something less than 10% of baby alligators are eaten by their parents.  Must be the luck of the draw.

The American alligator is a cold blooded reptile living in wetland areas.  It can grow between 6 and 11 feet long and arte usually found in the wild in Louisiana and Florida.

They have existed since the time of dinasours.

They are mostly meat eating reptiles, and display strength, speed and ferocity when attacking their prey.

They can run fast, but tire quickly which is fortunate for many golfers who have encountered them on the golf course.

If you look closely at this osprey searching for a fish you might be able to see that they have four toes on each foot all of which have sharp barbs.  Some of the reasons they are such excellent fishermen is that they have true color vision and their outer toe can reverse backward enabling it to hang onto a slippery fish.

When flying, the white pelicans soar on their wide black-tipped white wings.  A flock of these pelicans when migrating is impressive as each bird appears to take the cue from the one in front of it, starting to flap and beginning a glide when the bird in front does.

Their landings also are impressive and create quite a splash, especially when they are multiples at the same time.

The American white pelican is one of the largest of North American birds with a wingspan of about 9 feet.  Their overall length ranges from 4 feet to 5 1/2 feet and they weigh in at about 10 - 20 pounds.

They are almost big enough to appear prehistoric.

White pelicans feed differently than brown pelicans. The brown pelicans dive on the fish. The white pelicans float on the surface, submerge their heads and scoop up fish. They tend to fish in small groups, herding the fish in front of them and encircling them.

The Little Blue Heron is a stand-and-wait predator as opposed to being a   predator that dashes around looking for its prey.  They patiently stand and watch the water for fish and other small morsels. They periodically change locations by walking slowly as this one does on a nearby boat lift on a daily basis.

Of the 8 species of Pelicans, only the Brown Pelican lives primarily on coastal shores and is one of only two of the species that dramatically dive for their food. They can spot fish from 60-70 feet over the water and often dive from that height. as well.

They can live from 10 to 30 years and although endangered about 35 years ago they now number around 650,000 here in the U.S.

They  use their pouches to catch fish(not store them). After draining the water from their pouch they swallow their catch.

Their beaks can hold more water than their stomachs

Our wetland was trimmed down to the legal limit last week and the deer have become exposed.  This buck returns daily to feed on the cuttings, and I guess, whatever else it desires as it is the largest to come by on a daily basis.

Bucks and does remain separate from each other except during the mating

When we first rescued Schatzi, and later adopted her, we were not sure if she could overcome all of her ailments.  Given her history and her age, we also were not sure about whether she might have some behavioral issues as she appeared to be very timid and afraid of fast movements and loud noises.

After more than a year in her new home, she has turned out to be the quietest, calmest and sweetest dog we ever have known.  She has made our house a home filling the void in our lives when our last rescue, Mannie, crossed the bridge.

Since we cannot clone her, this reflection will have to do for now.

This young, six point buck shows every morning with 2 or three young does to feed in the wetland behind our home.  Fortunately for us, the wetland is full of appetizing plants so they have left our planting alone.

Of course, when autumn comes and the wetland growth begins to get ready for winter, you know our bushes will get more appealing.

The Amur tiger also is endangered. Again I photographed this one in captivity at a preserve.

Here are a few facts should you have the opportunity to encounter one:

Tigers' stripes are unique; they are like our fingerprints.

When running, they can reach a speed of about 40mph.

They can jump about 15 feet vertically and 30 feet horizontally.

When it is happy it purrs like your house cat.  When hunting, or when angry, you'll hear a muffled rumble.

By the look on its face you can tell this squirrel knows it has been trying to figure out how to jump from there to the bird feeder.  Bottom line after about 5 minutes of frenzied activity trying to get set for a leap, it gave up.

That doesn't mean it never tried again, but the feeder was more than 12 feet away, so the squirrel remained frustrated,

A pine marten belongs to the weasel family. Size wise it is about the size of your house cat.

It is widespread throughout Europe.  In North America, it is found primarily in Alaska, Canada and the Rocky Mountains.

It is an omnivore and will eat anything that is in abundance in their territory.  Their diet usually consist of 40% small mammals and about 30% fruit, but they also eat birds like magpies and jays and they eat eggs.

Symbolically the bridge represents a journey that allows you to cross and experience the journey anyway you want - - physically or spiritually.

I was about to call CPS (child protective services) as Mom and Dad took the babies out just before 7:00am and did not return home until 9:00pm.  They spent the entire day at the shallow end of the lake where the vegetation was easily accessible.  Babies and Mom need to build up strength.

As an aside, there still is one egg in the nest that never will hatch at this point.

Day 2 and the cygnets are out on a lake tour being guarded very closely by their parents.  I expect that over the next two weeks we will see them feeding most of the day to support their growth pattern. My best guess is that those that survive will weigh almost two pounds at the end of that time.

Our swans returned on March 5th and I observed the mating ritual on March 27th. Normal incubation  ranges from 32 to 45 days.  Yesterday was day 44.

So, please join me in wishing our 5 cygnets Happy Birthday.
The quintuplets emerged about mid afternoon to a very proud and happy mute swan couple.
All see very alert and active.  Now we have to hope that most or all survive the predators including fox, snapping turtles, blue herons, etc. that live here.

The tide was out and the tidal pools held lots of crustaceans and bait fish.  The focus of these birds was totally on their next meal.  Relative size of the birds played a role in which one got their first when a swimming fish was close, but aggression was minimal as there was enough for all.  Interesting trio of wading birds.

What's Happening Here What's Happening HereWhat's Happening Here

Every day during the past 2 weeks, this blue heron has been showing up along the shoreline.  Previously it had shown up periodically to stalk its next meal, but never on a daily basis.

In addition, each day it has kept getting nearer to the swans' nesting area.

When I captured this moment, I first thought that the heron was paying a visit to Mom to see how she was doing.  That impression came from the fact that I saw no reaction from either swan (Dad was in the middle of the lake).

My friend and photo guru, who I also refer to as the "Birdmeister" made it clear that this was not a friendly visit.  In fact, the blue heron was checking to see of any of the eggs had hatched so it could try and steal one of the babies - - a cygnet -- for its next meal.

My best guess is that when the cygnets are born, the reception for the blue heron will not be welcoming!

I was thinking about naming this swan after the historian, Herodotus. as nothing keeps her from her appointed task of protecting and incubating her clutch.

"It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed."

The Waiting Game The Waiting GameThe Waiting Game

Our swan couple have settled into the incubation period. She, the pen, spends most of her time sitting on the eggs.  Our temperatures declined quickly overnight and it appears as though she has spread her wings a bit to provide further shelter for the clutch of eggs.

The male, the cob, spends his days guarding the lake - - their lake -- against intruders, chasing all waterfowl away from the nest area, protecting his mate and feeding to keep up his strength.

We likely are half way through the incubation period now and hopefully all five eggs will hatch so we can watch the cygnets arrive and begin their new lives.

The clutch has been complete for at least 2 weeks. The pen will incubate them for about 5 or 6 weeks before the cygnets are born.  During this time the cob  stays nearby to defend the nest. During this time I have seen the pen leave the nest for short periods to feed on the vegetation within about a 10 foot radius and to bathe.  Before she leaves the nest, she usually hides the eggs by covering them over with material from the nest.

The spot they picked has a lot of material around the site.  This was one of the main reasons this site was selected as the swans will be adding to the nest on a regular basis, particularly during incubation. observe the swans.

Every day I watch them shuffle the twigs, leaves, moss, etc... from place to place within the nest.  I assume the purpose is to get them placed to provide the optimum surface in which to place the clutch of eggs.

If you look closely, you can catch a glimpse of a couple of eggs which the pen appears be moving into place.

The Canadian geese always seem to "test the water" with the swans.  Inevitably there are multiple geese - - sometimes as many as 8 or 10 - - that like to approach the swans' nesting area.

Always seems to end up the same way -- the female guards the nest and the male swan aggressively chases all the geese away from their home and their feeding grounds.

While I did not see who or what may have been approaching, the female swan - - the pen -- obviously went on alert to ward off intruders.  The male was off foraging about 30 yards away and immediately started paddling aggressively toward the nest.

"As the egg travels down the tube it gets larger and larger. This is because during its passage (it takes about a day or two to travel all the way down the tube) various parts are added in turn to give the egg its essential parts – very much like it’s moving along a factory conveyor belt."

Source: swans

"When the egg first emerges from the female swan, the colour could best be described as a bluish-grey. This colour is due to pigments are that added during the time when the shell was being formed, at the end of the oviduct. After the egg has been in the nest for a while, constant shuffling around in the cup of the nest by the pen, turns the egg more of an olive colour.

Eggs that have been in the nest for a while also exhibit many little scratches in their surface. These are due to them being stood on and being caught by the pen and cob’s claws on their webbed feet. The thick shell of the egg is easily strong enough to take the weight of an adult swan."

"After fertilisation has taken place, the egg travels down the oviduct by muscular contractions, similar to the way that food passes through our intestines. As the egg travels down the tube, essential elements are added to the egg piece by piece, so the final egg that will be laid by the bird will be protected from the outside environment and will also contain all the nutrients to enable the embryo to grow into a hatchling."

The next stage is when the male mounts the female. First he will paddle himself alongside her facing in the opposite direction. Then he turns so he is at a 90 degree angle off to her side.  After that he climbs onto her back. At that point, she will be sitting much lower in the water due his weight on her back.

Once done, he will quickly dismount her and the two birds will again face each other and rise so they're almost out of the water. They then will begin more movements as before.  They look like they are one - -  like a ballet - -in perfect harmony with one another.

My first post showed the early stage of the mating ritual of the swans.  This is the next phase where the two swans start to synchronize their actions. Now the ballet begins to take shape as they reach the point where they’re acting in unison. The swans now begin to make more physical contact where they press their breasts against each other’s, as they gracefully raise and lower their necks. Sometimes they appear to stare at each other during the up and down motions..

They start out close to each other. When they are almost side-by-side, they begin to dip their heads below the water, pull them out and begin preening.  After going through these movements several times, one pr both will stop and stretch its neck almost vertically.

It is like a synchronized ballet.

This is the very beginning stage of the elaborate mating ritual of these mute swans.

The swans will be close to each other, often side by side.  With their bodies almost side-by-side, they begin to dip their heads below the water, pull them out and begin preening themselves.

The next stages are even more elaborate and the pace picks up until the mating actual happens.  That's not the end of this elaborate ritual, however.

Stay connected and watch it unfold.  It is truly amazing and I was fortunate to have been able to observe it all.  Something I never will forget.

Private Island Private IslandPrivate Island

I mentioned in yesterday's blog "Almost There", some of the key requirements for a swan's nest.  Here are two other key points which you now can clearly see in this island like nest.

The nest has to be high enough to prevent water from getting in and swamping it.

As a protective measure against mammalian predators, the moat or ditch will surround the nest.

The final size of the nest depends on the amount and type of nearby material.

Also, if there is a lot of material around the nest site. The final nest will be larger it will be added to during the incubation process.  My best guess is that this one will continue to grow.

The finished nest should have the following features:

A depression where the eggs will lay. In the final nest building stage, the depression will be lined with softer material like grass and down from the swans to cushion the eggs.  I have noted the female plucking down during the past couple of days, so we may be nearing completion.

Sloping sides, to allow easy access to the nest for the cygnets and also allowing for  eggs to be pushed back into the depression should they fall out.

Material from the Moat Material from the MoatMaterial from the Moat

There are several key factors in creating the nest into which the eggs will be hatched and the cygnets born.

First, the nest must have close access to shallow water so food can be easily accessed.

Second,  an abundance of natural food available for both the parents and young has to be readily available.

Third, the space has to be relatively undisturbed from humans and predators.

Fourth, they need to have a large amount of nest building materials close by.

Our site meets all the requirements.

For 5 years I have been watching the swans return, build their nest on the other side of the lake and give birth to as many as 5 cygnets.

This year, they have decided to stay home with us, as opposed to nesting on the other side of the lake.

I am excited to be to watch and to photograph the entire life cycle so I can share it with you.

We now are in the nest building stage which has been going on for almost 2 weeks.  I anticipate that egg laying will begin in a week or so which likely will take another 10 - 14 days to complete

After that, we will sit and watch for the eggs to hatch which will take approximately 45 days.

I look forward  to capturing this life cycle and sharing it with you over the next two months.

The Crees, certainly aptly named it as the landscape was amazing. This lake, Emerald Lake, is one of the clearest ever have seen.

Coming out of Glacier National Park and heading north across the border into Canada, we immediately entered Waterton Lakes National Park.  Together these two make up what is known as the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park which is the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

This park is unique as it combines unusual geology combined with a somewhat mild climate providing for a vast variety of wildlife and rare flowers.  Overall, it is breathtaking.  I would have to say it has to be one of the most beautiful places in the world - - even though I haven't quite seen it all yet.

Glacier National Park is on the US Canadian border so our adventure continued along the Going to the Sun Road where we were awestruck by the glaciers (about 25 remaining0 in 2013) , the variety of birds(100's of species) and the large mammals like mountain goats,Canadian lynx, mountain lions and bears.  The landscape varies from mountains to prairies and is breathtaking at every turn.

Stay tuned as we take you with us on the rest of our journey into the Canadian Rockies and several Canadian National Parks.

Redheads breed in the northern prairies of the United States and Canada and in the marshes out west. In autumn, the vast majority of redheads fly to their primary wintering grounds along the Gulf Coast. Roughly 80%  winter on the Laguna Madre of South Texas and northern Mexico. Smaller numbers of redheads migrate east across the Great Lakes and winter along the Atlantic coast from Rhode Island to Florida.

Dressage is a form of horseback riding mostly performed in competition or exhibition. This equestrian sport is described as "the highest expression of horse training" where the "horse and rider are expected to perform from memory a series of predetermined movements". (Source: International Equestrian Federation).

At its peak the horse and rider respond as one with minimal aid from the rider.  It is like a ballet where the two are totally connected both mentally and physically.

I always have found water gardens, especially those with lotus blossoms particularly tranquil and an excellent place to sit back and connect with nature.

In addition to its sheer beauty, the water lily symbolizes innocence, purity, please, hope and wellness. They have been cultivated as an ornamental plant for thousands of years.

Ancient cultures associated them with gods and spirituality.  The lotus is the primary flower of Buddhism.  The flowering of the lotus symbolizes truth and purity to the Buddhists and is associated with Buddha himself.

Barn Owls sleep during the day and are active at night, they’re stealthy hunters, and have exceptional hearing.

They can pick up the very faintest noise from their prey and use it pinpoint the prey’s location.  They even are able to use it to locate prey under cover like in grass or snow.

They are called “Barn” Owls” as quiet barns on wide open farmland are the perfect places for them to build their nests.  The barns give them protection from the weather and predators, and  the farmland also offers them their favorite food - - -  rodents - - - which they swallow whole.

They do not “hoot”. Barn Owls make harsh, eerie screeches.

It  sits on  steep cliffs, about 125 feet high.  Legends abound on how it came to be "as well as the heroic acts of its guards and defenders. It dominates both the sea and land entrances to the city on the western side, and together with Bokar Fort, closes in and protects Dubrovnik's oldest harbour, Kalarinja. Hibiscus are found in many colors on shrubs and on trees.  In fact there are over 300 species, both annuals and perennials.

They prefer warmer, more tropical regions although I have photographed them in Michigan which is not known to be tropical, as well as Florida where they proliferate.

Bees find them particularly attractive, although they also are know to attract hummingbirds.

In addition to producing large colorful blooms, hibiscus has been used in many cultures as a remedy.  Tea brewed from hibiscus is still used in many countries as a common treatment for a variety of conditions.  Personally I never have tried it, and I cannot recommend it, but I understand it can be bitter.

I just enjoy their beauty and the opportunity to photograph them in their natural environment.

The Tridge is located in Chippewassee Park, in MIdland, MI.

The “Tridge”, opened in 1981.  It is a three-legged wooden pedestrian footbridge spanning the confluence of the Tittabawassee and Chippewa Rivers.

It consists of one 30 + foot tall central pillar supporting three spokes. Each spoke is 180 feet long by 8 feet wide.

The waters flowing here have first carried the birchbark canoes of Native Americans.  Later steam boats from Saginaw and billions of board-feet of white pine logs traversed these waters.

At the beginning of this year while in South Carolina, I was fortunate to happen upon several river otters fishing and playing in a coastal marsh area.

These two were having so much fun rolling around in the water, I was tempted to jump in and join them.  On this rare occasion, common sense took over and I just watched them frolicking. Of course, the fact that the temperature only was in the mid 50’s might have had something to do with the “common sense”.

The otter is the largest member of the weasel family found in South Carolina. Their weight range is 15 to 20 pounds with females slightly smaller than males.

They prefer clear water away from the intrusion of people. In South Carolina, otters are abundant in the coastal marshes, blackwater swamps and coastal waterfowl impoundments as these locations provide an abundance of food and cover.

Otters are known to eat almost any animal matter found in the water like crayfish, crabs, fish, turtles, and even waterfowl. Being opportunistic, their diet tends to reflects the availability of the prey. Being  smarter than us, when they go fishing otters usually prey on the slower fish such as carp, suckers, and catfish.

Grizzly bears normally weigh between 300 - 900 pounds which is enormous. When you encounter one in the field, they look gigantic. Reportedly the largest grizzly bear on record weighed in at 1600 pounds and was found in Alaska.

Grizzlies are among the largest living carnivores. When on all four legs they appear to be 3-4 feet tall. When they stand upright on their hind legs, they can reach 9 feet tall - - an awesome sight.

Grizzly’s are omnivores, which means they eat vegetation and meat. A grizzly’s diet can consist of fruit, nuts, a wide variety of leaves, berries, roots and other animals. Animals can be as small as rodents or as large as moose since these bears are at the top of the food chain.

They have excellent eyesight and excellent smell.  Supposedly their sense of smell is even better than hound dogs.

They use certain roaring and snorting languages for communicating among themselves. The roaring is load and foreboding and certainly sends a message.  I sure heard this one loud and clear.

Rarely seen, especially during daylight hours, this mountain lion jumped down from a tree crossing our path as it took off running.

In the event you encounter one sometime in the future, there are certain things you may want to know beforehand.  Fortunately, I was around to learn about them after this encounter.

They are often referred to as cougars as well as mountain lions, but in either case, they are carnivores and will consume an average of 8-10 pounds of meat daily.

They stalk their prey silently and prefer to ambush it and pounce.  They also have very keen night vision making them even better ambush hunters.

Finally, they can reach running speeds of 50 mph so it is fortunate for us that they tend to avoid human contact.

Ready for Action? Ready for Action?Ready for Action?

The mountain lion is the fourth largest cat in the world. Males tend to be larger averaging around 8 feet from nose to tail tip, while females average about a foot less.

On average males weigh 150 pounds, while females’ average weight is about 120 pounds.

Mountain lions cannot roar, however, they do produce a distinctive scream known as caterwauling.

Like other cats, the mountain lion is a carnivore. While deer are its most important food source, the mountain lion will kill and eat anything it can catch, ranging from insects all they way up in size to a moose.

Like most cats, mountain lions are crepuscular and tend to hunt before dawn and after dusk.

If you come face-to-face with one do not:

  • Run:  Running can, in fact, trigger the mountain lion’s instinct to chase. They can reach speeds of 45+ mph in a sprint so you won’t win that race!
  • Crouch Down or Bend Over: To the mountain lion’s eyes, you will look like a prey animal in that position.
  • Climb: Trying to out-climb a mountain lion would be like trying to outrun it.  They can leap 15 feet up a tree; some have jumped almost 20 feet.

Your best approach is to stand tall and make some noise. Hopefully, you never will need it, but iIt wouldn’t hurt to carry a weapon, just in case.

Early autumn in Michigan is the beginning of my favorite time of year in the area.  The air is fresh, the colors are beginning to change and there just seems to be a tranquility settling in before the winter hibernation begins.

Michigan's two peninsulas offer many photo opportunities throughout the year, but fall color change seems to present opportunities at every turn in the road.  Although I try never to miss a chance to photograph a scene, my bucket list includes a long list of locations to visit this time of year in particular.  Hopefully, this year will produce some new surprises so you enjoy the fall season with me.

A male deer is called a buck. The size of the buck depends on many factors, including longevity, his herd's sex composition, age, and environmental conditions.

The most unique feature of a buck is his antlers. Each winter, the buck will shed its antlers and grow new ones in the spring.

Dominance is very important to the male deer. If challenged, a larger buck will go into a stare down with all the other bucks. Out of fear, most bucks will avoid eye contact. However, if a brave opponent is found, the two duelers will lock antlers, and then pull away. This occurs several times until one buck yields from the fight due to injuries.

A dominant buck presents himself as proud and unafraid, with head held high and tail extended straight back. Dominant bucks have distinguishing dark hair tufts covering the lower leg which serve to dispense the buck's unique glandular scent distinguishing him as the sire of the herd.

Very small, very agile, very acrobatic in flight and very lightweight makes capturing these hummingbirds in flight very rewarding.  To put it into perspective, they can fly in any direction, their wings beat 50-200 per second and they weigh about 3 grams.

If you put 2 US nickels in the palm of your hand, the combined weight would slightly exceed that of 3 hummingbirds.

“Yoho” is a Cree Indian expression meaning “awe and wonder”.  I can attest

Another part of our visit to the Domecq family ranch in Cadiz Spain included watching the young bulls brought into a fenced area where a herd of cows was grazing. The bulls were separated from the cows by three  large, well trained pit bulls.  No animals were hurt during the process, but it certainly clarified how focused a pit bull is when accomplishing its task. It was interesting to watch and learn how much respect the bulls gave the dogs.

Once the cows were led into a separate field, we watched the ranch hands taught younger members of the Domecq family how to work the herd without harming the animals.

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve is located on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland, Canada.  It is the most accessible seabird rookery in North America. Bird Rock hosts the third-largest nesting site and southernmost colony of northern gannets in North America. The site is overflowing with perching, diving, and scrambling birds from edge to edge.

Assuming you are savvy enough to carry only the photo gear you will need, the 1 km hike from the Interpretation Center to the edge of the cliff where you can view, but not access, Bird Rock some 30-40 feet away is a relatively easy climb.  Bring very piece of gear you own and it could feel like the hike never ends.

Gannets nest on Bird Rock here by the thousands in the months of April through June.  They seem to really like Bird Rock, a 300+ foot tall  sandstone cliff which stands out above the pounding surf in the cold, frigid waters of the North Atlantic.

Gannets spend most of their lives at sea and when they finally return to land, they come back to the same nest — and same mate — every year pointing their heads to the sky, preening each other.

The affection pretty much ends there as the gannets compete fiercely for both space and food.  The two gannets in the attached photo were surrounded by hundreds of other gannets, but their preening and mating ritual seemed to make them oblivious to the commotion surrounding them.

We barely could hear each other over the crescendo of sound from all the screeching seabirds.  It was almost deafening from the non-stop noise of thousands of gannets squawking.  Not just gannets, but the cliffs also were covered with black-legged kittiwakes, common murres, and other seabirds.

Out on the water in July 2018 in Bonavista Bay, Newfoundland.

Story is when Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot) first saw North America in 1497, his first words were “O buono vista!”  In English, it means “Oh happy sight!”, which very appropriately describes the town of Bonavista.  Bonavista is located about a 3 1/2 drive from the capital city of St. John’s which is where our adventure began.

The world's largest population of feeding humpback whales is found here in Newfoundland.  They migrate from the Caribbean and spend from April to October in the waters off Newfoundland and Labrador.

To ensure that we were able to get close we ventured out in a Zodiac

The first evening about the time we got to the whales feeding area, the wind picked up and the waves bounced us around.  Sitting in the bow with the waves coming over the top, I had to shield my camera inside my wet suit to keep it dry. It worked for the camera, but not so much for me.

Out again before sunrise in the morning in calmer waters was an amazing adventure.  There were several whale species feeding in the area .

While approaching a pod of humpbacks, one seemed to be attracted to our zodiac which made for some outstanding photo opportunities but also required some expert boat handling to avoid getting capsized.  One humpback seemed to be so attracted to our presence that I could have touched its fin on several occasions.

Humpbacks generally are 40-50 feet in length and weigh between 55-65 tons which dwarfed our 6 person Zodiac.  It also made for a very exciting

ride as the boat rode the swells created by the whales movements.

Traveling through Newfoundland and Labrador was another memorable experience for me.  It is an exotic destination.  In fact, it is the easternmost part of North America you can go to without getting wet.  Of course, you can accomplish that too if you step a bit too far.  It is where the sun first kisses the North American continent.  You effectively are are standing at the end of the earth.

As we set out at 4:30 on this morning our destination was Cape Bonavista to try and capture the sun as it broke the horizon using the historic lighthouse to complete the scene.

Lightkeepers have manned the Cape Bonavista Lighthouse since the early 1840’s.  While here you can view a seemingly endless horizon and you might be fortunate enough to see an iceberg or a humpback whale out to sea.

It is the fourth oldest lighthouse in Newfoundland and in 1970 it was declared a Provincial Historic Site.

I have the good fortune to live on a small lake in Michigan, and have been able to watch a swan couple raise and protect their cygnets each spring. Nature always has a way of balancing things out, so not all of the cygnets survive each year.  In fact, some years none survive even with the adults fiercely protecting them.

Swans are very protective of their nesting area and they consider their nesting area the entire lake.  In this capture, the male swan is chasing a goose  - - one of about 8 or 10 - that made the mistake of wandering into the swans' "turf" to feed on the vegetation.

The male swan can have a wingspread of up to 7 feet and weigh as much as 50 pounds.  In comparison, a  Canadian Goose typically weighs about 8 pounds and has a wingspread in the 4 - 5 foot range giving the swan a distinct size advantage.

I think it is more about instinct and attitude than size, as the adult swans will just as aggressively attack any person approaching the nesting area or the cygnets.

The island(s) of Newfoundland is the easternmost point in North America. It is an excellent breeding ground for many seabirds including the Northern Gannet and the Atlantic Puffin.

The Bonavista Peninsula is one of the few places in North America where you can get up close to a puffin colony.  The Elliston rookery has hundreds of nesting pairs which can be viewed after a brief walk outside of town.

The Atlantic Puffin (Fratercula artica) is one of four puffin species.  It is the only one that lives in the North Atlantic Ocean.

The puffin also is known as the “sea parrot” due primarily to its unique coloring.  Its face is primarily white, but it has additional colors around the eyes and the base of the bill.  Their underbellies are white and the rest of their bodies are primarily black.

Puffins also are fondly referred to as “the clowns of the sea”.  It seems as though they were created from parts leftover from other birds, including a beak like a parrot, feet from a duck and colors similar to some penguins.  No matter what they are called, they impressive in the air and underwater.

Puffins are true seabirds spending the majority of the year at sea.  They pass most of their time swimming, diving and feeding.  They are propelled by very powerful wings and they can dive to depths of about 200 feet.

They do come ashore to mate and breed at which time their beaks sport bright orange and yellow colors.  They are monogamous and mate for life.

This park contains a vast variety of topography and ecosystems.  It is a combination of farmland, rolling hills and forests. About 230 acres of water with several miles of shoreline await the park user.

A dam, constructed by some developers, formed one large lake from seven small lakes. There are 230 acres of water with Seven Lake being the largest at 170 acres.  The  2nd largest of the seven lakes is Dickinson Lake at almost 45 acres.

The various lakes contain an abundance of fish including bluegill, bass, pike, tiger muskie and catfish.

In the wet areas, you are likely to find many species of songbirds, waterfowl, heron, squirrels, turtles, deer, muskrats, turtles, squirrels, deer, and many other wildlife species.

After crossing the Atlantic our second port of call was Cadiz Spain. Cadiz itself stands on a peninsula jutting out into a bay, and is almost entirely surrounded by water. While there, we were able to visit the Domecq family ranch a short ride outside the city.

From his obituary: “Alvaro Domecq y Diez, was an aristocratic bullfighter, horseman, pilot and scion of a distinguished sherry family. … ”Don Alvaro", as he was known, fought in the Spanish Civil War as a pilot in General Franco's air force and went on to become one of the finest horsemen of his generation, an eminent breeder of toros bravos, and the patriarch of a dynasty of rejoneodores, mounted bullfighters.”

The Domecq ranch is famous for breeding fighting bulls and fine Andalusian horses. The day we were there we were able to view, the men working with the bulls and the horses.

Decided to push the envelope and take a drive in the countryside to photography old barns. While it was partly cloudy and calm when leaving home, the scattered cumulus clouds soon began to build. and the towering cumulus thunder heads built rather quickly.

About 1 1/2 hours from home, based on my years of weather experience in the Air Force, I decided to return home heading away from the rapidly approaching storm.  About 30 minutes later, the sky lit up with magical displays of lightening.

As a photographer, it is hard to resist capturing one more moment and create one more memory.  For me, these solitary buildings seemed to call out, and as luck would have it I was in the right place, the right position and at the right time to capture this scene.

Apparently, it was a good decision as this photo captured first placed in the 2020 Celebrate Michigan photo contest Four Seasons category.

Japanese gardens are known as a place to go for meditation and self reflection.   The essence of a Japanese bridge is that it symbolizes a journey.  For me, it provides  a sense of unity with nature.

In Japanese culture, the bridge symbolizes a journey, either physical or spiritual. The  curved "red bridge", or the "Guzei" is probably the most iconic and most well recognized.

Red is a color heavily intertwined with Zen and offers you the opportunity to take a spiritual as well as a physical journey while crossing it.  The "Guzei" represents everything sacred and also represents the opportunity for transformation.

Hummingbird Moth - 1 Hummingbird Moth - 1Hummingbird Moth - 1

Just like the hummingbird, the hummingbird moth’s buzzing and humming sound is created by its rapid wing movement.

The fast-moving hummingbird moth has a rapid wingbeat of up to 70 times per second enabling. It can fly up to about 12 miles per hour.

Instead of a beak like a hummingbird, it has a long tongue-like proboscis that rolls out of its coiled tube to reach the nectar deep inside flowers. Its tongue is big reaching about twice the length of the moth’s body.

Its eyes are large and menacing. They would appear to warn predators to stay away.  I know it worked that way in my case the first time I saw one.  Also protecting it from potential predators is its close resemblance to a bird, instead of a bug.

They range from 2—2.5 inches long and are covered in gray hair that resembles feathers, with white, rust or brown markings or variations. Their wingspan ranges from 2 to 6 inches.

Tiger Bee Fly Tiger Bee FlyTiger Bee Fly

I have photographed tigers, bees and flies, but this is a new one for me.

Source: Georgia Dept. of Natural Resources

Although this is a hard-working pollinator, it draws our ire because female carpenter bees bore holes as long as 10 inches in bare wood on our homes, decks and other structures to lay their eggs. People try a number of techniques to thwart the bees, such as swatting them out of the air, spraying areas where they are boring with citrus sprays, trying to catch them in traps, plugging their holes with aluminum foil or steel wool, playing loud music near their nests, and treating their nest cavities with insecticides.

Unfortunately, many homeowners plagued with what they perceive is an arch nemesis do not realize they have a wild ally that works diligently throughout the warm months to control carpenter bees. Mother Nature's carpenter bee control agent is an insect known as the tiger bee fly (Xenox tigrinus).

Actually, this insect is not a bee at all; it is a true fly. However, the insect's name and menacing appearance would lead you to believe this is one critter you need to avoid. It is one of the largest flies you have probably ever seen. A tiger bee fly can measure anywhere from 0.75–1.75 inches long.

When viewed from the front its long proboscis gives the insect the appearance of a really big mosquito. Fortunately, the long, slender beak is not capable of drawing blood from man or beast. Its body is black and fuzzy suggesting it is a large bee. The fly's long tapered, swept back, clear wings are decorated with intricate black patterns. The markings along the trailing edge of the wing look somewhat like tiger stripes. Its huge eyes appear to be giant versions of housefly eyes. The insect's black abdomen is marked with two white spots.

When my wife spotted the first one in our yard she aptly described it as looking like a horse fly with stained glass wings.

Unfortunately, many tiger bee flies are killed by folks that mistake them for a stinging or biting insect. In truth, the tiger bee fly is harmless and highly beneficial.

Remarkably, in spite of tiger bee fly's ferocious appearance, it is a member of a suite of native pollinators that inhabit our backyards. The tiger bee fly uses its fearsome beak to sip nectar from flowers. Consequently, this bee fly can be seen hovering in front of blossoms adorning a number of flowering plants. (It is particularly fond of coneflowers and asters.) What makes it unique among its fellow native pollinators is a mating behavior that is straight out of a horror movie.

After mating, the female hunts carpenter bee nest sites. As such, they are often seen hovering near carpenter bee nests. Once the female tiger bee fly finds a nest containing carpenter bee eggs she lays her eggs alongside the eggs left by the bees.

The fly’s larvae are parasites. On hatching, they are extremely active and move about seeking carpenter bee larvae. The tiger bee fly larvae then attach themselves to newly hatched carpenter bee larvae and methodically drink them dry. When each tiger bee fly completes this vampire-like task all that is left of the carpenter bee is an empty hull. The carpenter bee is literally eaten alive.

Butterflies and moths have one thing in common.  They have four stages of life - -  egg, larva which is the caterpillar stage, pupa and the adult stage.

Milkweed is the only plant that monarch caterpillars eat.  It is where the females lay their eggs on the underside of the leaves.  After laying the eggs, it takes roughly one week for the eggs to hatch.  The monarch butterflies life cycle lasts only about 3 to 4 weeks

Monarchs coming out during the period from August through

October are unable to reproduce.  These are the ones that feed, store nectar and head south to the mountains of Mexico where they rest until February when they head north to Texas where the life cycle begins again.

Monarch butterflies are a perfect example of a creepy crawly thing emerging into a beautiful flying insect.

Insect with a History Insect with a HistoryInsect with a History

Here is something that caught me by surprise. “Dragonflies were one of the first insects to occupy earth.  Although they may seem small now, dragonflies evolved from much bigger ancestors.  According to research, the early dragonflies about 300 million years back had wingspans of two and half feet.” (Source:

The blue dragonfly is also called the Blue Dasher. They are part of the skimmer family and are found primarily in the US and Bahama.  Now they grow from 1 to 1.5 inches on average which is a lot smaller than 300 million years ago.

Like hummingbirds they can see ultraviolet light giving them the ability to see colors beyond what humans can see.

They also have great skills in motion detection and can see all directions at once at the same time. Combined, these attributes provide them with superior hunting skills.  Reportedly their strike success rate is 955 making it an almost certainty their target will be caught.

A single dragonfly can eat up to 100 mosquitos a day which is a real plus.  We sight the on our deck daily and rarely if ever are bothered by mosquitos.

Just think, if they were the same size as they were millions of years ago, we might be the target !!!!

Mendenhall Glacier Mendenhall GlacierMendenhall Glacier

The first time I visited Alaska, I flew into Anchorage, rented a car, loaded my fishing gear and wet a line at every turn in the road from Anchorage to the nearby Little Susitna River to Homer and beyond.  My line stayed wet not only because of the fishing, but also because it rained almost constantly.

When I returned on a cruise many years later, the fishing gear was in Florida and I was armed with my first digital camera. At that time, I knew little about the camera or photography, but that trip motivated me to “focus” on photography as my primary spare time activity.

This time we cruised the Inside Passage one of the five main regions of Alaska.  It was formed by glaciers and is filled with wildlife, snow capped mountains, majestic forests and national parks.  There are not enough adjectives to accurately describe the beauty and wonder of Alaska.  It is a land of adventure and beauty.

The blue sheet ice Mendenhall Glacier, near Juneau was the first glacier I ever had seen.  At that time it stretched about 12 or 13 miles, truly a massive river of ice.  I was on the bow of the ship in the early morning hours as we approached the glacier.  I was trying to steady myself and

the camera, partially because the ship was moving and partially because I was so excited about the scene unfolding before me.  To put it simply, I was awestruck!!

You can find American Alligators throughout the southeastern United States.  In Florida, one of the best places is the Everglades.  In Georgia, the Okefenokee Swamp, a National Wildlife Refuge, is so full of alligators that you cannot miss them.

We launched our boat before sunrise and found dozens, of them of all sizes, cruising the canals on our way out to explore the broader expanse of water. We encountered over 100 alligators in a short, 4 hour leisurely trip.  It was almost as if the alligators were just as excited to see us as I was to see them.  In addition, we encountered flocks of ibis, osprey, red tail hawks and many other bird species.  There were photo opportunities in every direction, so I was grinning as broadly as this 'gator.

I would suggest the best time of year to plan a trip would be from late spring through early fall.    If you go, make sure to go early morning or you could be surrounded by biting insects of one kind or another.

Driftwood Beach Driftwood BeachDriftwood Beach

Georgia boasts four barrier islands called the Golden Isles, one of which is Jeckyll Island.  You can find this idyllic spot about halfway between Savannah, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida.

Each of these islands offers you unique attractions, but my favorite is Jeckyll Island with its natural beauty and unique landscape.

The sand dunes on Jeckyll Island, provide a home to thousands of different plant and animal species.  To name a few, you can find ghost crabs, plovers, sea gulls, sea oats, etc.  Loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs as do many shorebirds.

The beach at the north end of the island provides a unique landscape with magnificent weathered driftwood and trees left behind as a result of erosion.  While I would not recommend it for swimming, it is a photographer's paradise.

This photo was featured as the month of August in the Oculina Bank Calendar.

Golden Glow Golden GlowGolden Glow

I arrived at the edge of Moraine Lake before sunrise to make sure I was set up to catch the sun as it kissed the peaks of the mountain tops.  As I stepped out of the car, I was hit by an almost wintery blast of cold air with the temperature just above freezing.  I didn’t realize it, but at an altitude just over 6000 feet, the lake doesn’t begin to melt until June which is when I was there.

I was about an hour too early, so the smarter photographers still were at home.  I did manage to set up and returned to the car to warm up for a while.  It also gave me a great opportunity to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the scene.

The water is an amazing color, almost turquoise from the glacier melt.  The lake is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks, and is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and rock piles.  It was so stunning it almost seemed unreal.

Lake Louise and Moraine Lake both are located in Banff National Park with Moraine Lake being about 9 miles southeast of Lake Louise.

While Lake Louise is beautiful and is better known, I believe the beauty of Moraine Lake surpasses that of Lake Louise. Lake Moraine always is on the lists of the most beautiful places in the world.  It is a glacier-fed lake at an elevation just over 6000 feet. You be the judge, but a bit of discomfort was worth capturing the moment.

Boca de Valeria Boca de ValeriaBoca de Valeria

Boca de Valeria is a very small village located  where the Amazon and the Valeria rivers meet.  If you look closely on a map of Brazil, you might find this remote community of about 100 people between the towns of Santarem and Parentins.

It was a real awakening to visit here because we got to see the authentic lifestyle and dress of the local Indians, pretty much all of whom to came out to greet us.

As the village was small, most of the tourists returned to the ship after about an hour.  I elected to sty and seek out the tribal chief.  As he spoke a dialect that I did not understand, through a mixture of Spanish, broken Italian and a lot of hand gestures. we managed to communicate my wish to fish the river.

Talk about adventures!!!  I got into a dugout canoe with a father and son who took me to their residence to pick up some gasoline (stored in a large plastic bottle which previously contained a soft drink) and some bait - - an old fish to be cut up.  Our fishing gear consisted of small branches off a nearby tree with a short piece of line and a bare hook.  Reminded me of my childhood days fishing ion a local lake for bluegills.

After maneuvering around many cuts in the backwaters of the Amazon, we found a spot in the middle of nowhere where we began fishing.  While we did not catch any very large fish, we did catch a great variety of fish I never had seen before.  Oh yes, we did catch a Pirhana or two among the collection.  One fish I caught actually had a square body and was almost purple in color.

After returning to the ship a few hours later, I discovered that there are about 3000 known species of fish in the Amazon and it is believed that there are about as many unknown species.

Just as a matter of information, another day we fished specifically for Pirhana after which we got to dine on ten, rather than them on us, and I found out that they are a very tasty white fish.

A great adventure which enabled encompassed both of my hobbies - - fishing and photography.

Ultraviolet World Ultraviolet WorldUltraviolet World

Being sequestered does have some advantages.  Instead of seeking new photo opportunities away from home, I decided to focus on my immediate surroundings.

I have learned a lot about ruby throated hummingbirds which started showing up about 4 weeks ago.

Although there are over 300 species of hummingbirds in the world, less than 10 of these show up in the US.  To begin with, their eggs are about the size of a jelly bean.  When they grow up they weigh only about 3 grams - - about 2/3's  the weight of a US nickel.

They are aerial acrobats and are the only bird I know of that can fly forward, backward, sideways, straight up and even upside down.  They even have been known to do backward somersaults.  Any wonder why they are difficult to photograph!!

The ruby color on their throat is not a result of feather color, but a result of iridescence from sunlight.

While most wildlife finds food based on scent, these little birds rely on their eyesight.  As published in the New York Time on 6/19/20, here is something related to their eyesight discovered only recently.

"Hummingbirds were already impressive. They move like hurried insects, turn on aerial dimes and extract nectar from flowers with almost surgical precision. But they conceal another talent, too: seeing colors that human eyes can’t perceive.

Ultraviolet light from the sun creates colors throughout the natural world that are never seen by people. But researchers working out of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory reported on Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that untrained broad-tailed hummingbirds can use these colors to help them identify sources of food."

That's the hummingbird lesson of the day.  I hope you enjoyed the photo and the information.

Over the Ocean Over the OceanOver the Ocean

Just as background, before returning to Michigan about 5 years ago, I had the good fortune to spend the better part of 20+ years in various parts of Florida.  For most of that time, I was focused on fishing, but during the last 5 years there I was bitten by the photography bug.

I used to spend my time and money looking for that magic fishing gear, but photography has taught me, that aside from the boat I owned, I now can INVEST in photo gear which seems to get updated almost daily.

One afternoon, while sitting on the balcony enjoying an espresso, accompanied by my pal Hooch the Westie,  we watched the rain clouds open and a beautiful full rainbow appear over the Atlantic.  Cloudy days and rain showers are a common, almost daily event in Florida during the summer months, but this was special as it provided the opportunity to capture a full rainbow in all its glory.

What could be better, mans best friend, an espresso and a magnificent view.

Watchful Eye Watchful EyeWatchful Eye

This mountain lion took the high ground to overlook the approaching photographers.  You can see the tension in its muscles and its focus which makes it appear as though it might be getting to leap right at us.

They can outrun us and out climb us.  In addition, they can bound about 18 feet in the air and have been known to leap a distance of almost 50 feet horizontally.  We were very happy that these cats try and avoid human contact as much as possible.  While it seemed like a long time that the cat had been thinking about the possibility of one of us being its next meal, it likely only was a matter of seconds before it took off over the hill.

Fortunately, it just made for some great photos.

Cascade Ponds Cascade PondsCascade Ponds

The Cascade Ponds are located very near the town of Banff in Alberta Canada.

The town of Banff covers about 2.5 square miles.  It was incorporated as a municipal[pality just 30 years ago, in 1990.  Interestingly, it was the first municipality in Canada to be incorporated in a National Park.  In fact, Banff National Park was Canada's first national park.  It covers over 2500 square miles.  Unfortunately, I only got to photograph a very small;; portion of that are, but what I saw was magnificent and I hope to return someday and capture the rest.

While not famous like Lake Louise and Morraine Lake, when I found Cascade Ponds, I envisioned a scene with perfectly calm water, a gorgeous bridge and mountains forming the perfect background.

We were told to stay together as a group while photographing this predator.  I understood, but when behind the lens, I tend to forget everything except my subject. This time could have been a disaster.

I had moved a couple of feet to one side to capture a better angle and was not aware the group had moved in the opposite direction.  About 15 feet separated us.

Then I heard a shout to keep my eyes on the leopard and start moving sideways. From the leopard’s look, I had become a much smaller target as though I was separated from the herd.

The cat was staring directly at me.  The hunch in its back and the curl in its tail signified it was getting ready to pounce.  Fortunately, I rejoined the group and the tension left the cat and  eventually it left me too.

I still have a vivid memory of what being targeted by a leopard feels like.

Rescued !

On May 22nd I was swooped out of a bad situation and rescued by my new foster parents. They help the Great Lakes Westie Rescue in southeast Michigan.  I am a Wheaten Scottish Terrier, but I was lucky enough to be rescued by them.  My diet is much better,I have had more baths in a week than I had in the past 2 years and I am getting caught up on my medical care.

As a senior, between 11 -12 years old, I am very quiet and calm. I heard them say, I may be the sweetest dog they ever have known.

Sure hope they adopt me when the fostering is finished!  I will try and make them as happy as they were with Mannie.  I understand they rescued each other.

By far much larger than our 6 person Zodiac.

About 40 miles from home checking the color change.  Timing was premature for peak color, but the calm waters and interesting cloud formation was irresistible.

Driving from a morning of whale photography to the cliffs to photograph birds, we briefly stopped at this overlook to take in the serenity of the scene.

Amur leopards are critically endangered. Estimates are there only are about 70 left in the wild.

The leopard is the smallest of the four big cats - - tiger, lion, jaguar, and leopard. This one appears to weigh around 50-60 kg.

Similar to other leopards, the Amur leopard can run at speeds around 35 miles per hour. They also have been reported to leap more than 19 feet horizontally and up to 10 feet vertically and they are skilled climbers.
When it comes to hunting, big prey are stalked and taken down with a bite to the throat. Small prey, such as small birds or mice, will receive a fatal blow from the feline's paw.
